&#x3C;b&#x3E;Re: Battle Creek oil spill among largest in Midwest history&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Tar sands seem to be really dependent on that Michigan pipeline. Now, we have two pipelines shut down in the Midwest -- regional spike in gasoline prices seems probable, IMO.

&#x3C;a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/industry-news/energy-and-resources/enbridge-shutdown-hits-heavy-oil-firms/article1699009/" class="postlink"&#x3E;Enbridge shutdown hits heavy oil firms&#x3C;/a&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote class="uncited"&#x3E;&#x3C;div&#x3E;Since Enbridge&#8217;s Line 6B was knocked out of service in Michigan in late July, crude supplies have been backing up in Canada, resulting in a slide in oil prices for Canadian product.

Relative to U.S. prices, Canadian heavy oil futures are down by more than $9 (U.S.) a barrel, while lighter sweet crudes have also dropped sharply &#8211; about $6 a barrel.

&#8220;We&#8217;re absolutely getting destroyed,&#8221; said Tim Gunn, the president of Net Energy Inc., a Calgary brokerage firm that tracks prices.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

I gave the problem neighbour some tomatoes today. They said thanks I'll have them for lunch but never bothered to put down or stop talking on the phone while meeting me at the door. I suppose the thanks is a start. Maybe it was a critical call she had to take. maybe they'll move. maybe I'll save a bullet for them.

I regret making that last posting. It's dismissive and blaze in tone - gloating.

This reminds me of the North American amphibian population collapse, but not quite as bad.

Igor looks to be headed for the fishes (though it is too early to be too sure, it could take a swipe at the east coast).

Of much more interest is the disturbance called 92L which, if it develops, will be called Julia.

&#x3C;blockquote class="uncited"&#x3E;&#x3C;div&#x3E;The disturbance is in a dangerous location for development, and gives me the greatest concern of any Atlantic disturbance so far this year. The models predict that by Saturday, 92L will bring heavy rains to Puerto Rico. These rains will then spread to the Dominican Republic on Sunday, and Haiti, Jamaica, and eastern Cuba on Monday. &#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;The longer range track of 92L is uncertain, and will strongly depend on where the storm drifts during the next two days.&#x3C;/span&#x3E; The ECMWF and GFS models predict a more southerly path through the Western Caribbean towards Belize and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and the NOGAPS and Canadian models predict a more northerly path along the length of Cuba towards Florida. NHC is giving 92L a 40% chance of developing into a tropical depression by Saturday. Stay tuned.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

I will wait for the input of the general but this storm appears to be a little south of the eastern &#x3C;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebert_Box" class="postlink"&#x3E;Herbert Box&#x3C;/a&#x3E;

shortage of drivers is the refrain of the ATA ..they have average 150% turn over at the big companies and use the &#x26;quot;shortage&#x26;quot; story to justify needing to bring in mor somalians, haitians, east europeans and SW asians on temporary visas... ...

there is no freight sitting anywhere unhauled due to driver shortage.

			<description>&#x3C;h5&#x3E;&#x3C;a href="http://www.malthusia.com/viewforum.php?f=7" title="Preparing for Doom"&#x3E;Preparing for Doom&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/h5&#x3E;
&#x3C;b&#x3E;Re: What's your five year plan?&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

More items to address here:

CLOTHING: Being old, we have had time to accumulate a lot of stuff, but clothing does wear out. We have a very good (modern, no less!) Singer treadle sewing machine--made in their plant in Scotland, in the mid-1960's. Looks identical to my wife's electric machine from the same era, and some parts interchange. DD has a singer from about 1910, in pristine shape, and we have another old one for parts. Spare belts, needles, bobins, etc., stored. Wife and DD both sew well, and have a stash of materials and sundries. We really need to add to the materials, however, and need to add a couple good winter coats.

SHOES: I can do a lot of shoe repair by hand, and have what it takes to do that, but I'm not a cobbler. So, we have several spare pairs on hand, including heavy winter work boots, and hiking boots. I keep a supply of leather on hand for many uses, including harness repair for DD horse harness. She can also do repairs on it. Our weakness here is limited leather stock and adhesives.

SHOP: Own a machine shop, with capabilities for welding and sheet metal fabrication. For woodworking, I have electric power tools, and also a collection of hand tools to do it all, from felling a tree to finished furniture. (THAT is unbelievably hard work.) Much of the metal shop is hand-powered, and the rest will run from a generator, but not from what solar PV we can afford. Thus, I'm working on completing projects that require heavy electrical power now. Have long term shop supplies on hand.

FISHING/TRAPPING/HUNTING: I'm not much of a fisherman, but there is a river and a couple lakes within bike distance, and I do have enough tackle to get supper, if need be. Have experience at the rest, and can do well at it. Lots of whitetail deer around here. I need a new hunting bow.

SECURITY: We have good doors and windows, a metal roof, brick siding, a Rottweiller, a fence, solar fence charger, and monitor system. Those are visible. Beyond that is nobody's business but ours.

BUGOUT: In a word, no, ain't going there. We are staying here. Whatever happens, will happen here. Exceptions could be natural disasters, chemical spills, or the like, for which we keep bugout bags and totes to load in the trucks. Not planning to go any farther than our DD place, a few miles, and there are many ways to get there.

OIL PRODUCTS: These are vulnerable to supply disruptions and price increases, so we store what we expect to use for a couple years, at least. We store other products tied to oil, such as paints, roof coating, solvents for those, glues and plastic materials for shop use. I plan to add to this category.

TIRES: Are a special case, since very few are made in the US now, and are subject to import duties increasing. We have nearly new rubber on all the vehicles, and new or good used spare sets. Have manual tire changers, a balancer, and repair stuff to fix what we have. I keep spares mounted on wheels for the garden tractor. Extra tires are stored wrapped in saran wrap in the barn where it is cool.

Our plans are closely tied to family and community life, where we participate daily. We believe that a healthy community is absolutely required, and try to do our part to keep it that way. Future plans include more trade with local producers and expansion of our DD home school teaching efforts, using our shop to introduce kids to the manual arts, since they aren't taught in the school system now. We plan to keep adding to our collection of textbooks and reference materials.

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Re: Efficiency Paradox&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Consider reading &#x26;quot;Ishmael&#x26;quot; by Daniel Quinn, if you haven't already. A lot of your questions are answered there.

Re: retirement ... retirement these days = Social Security (at least here in the US), which is bankrupt already. So raising the retirement age saves money. Yeah, it hurts unemployment rates but that's the trade off.

Back in medieval times, only those without land or lord worked a wage job. It was considered the lowest kind of job that only scummy transient-type people did, because why would you want your livelihood to depend on someone else unless you were too stupid or lazy to work your own fields or do your own craft?

Now work = wage. People have no idea how to make a real living -- they are all dependent on others' good will. Actually growing your own food or making your own home products is seen as some sort of weird hobby.

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Food for a crowded planet:&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

&#x26;quot;Oleaginous Japanese Pea
This is a half pea, half bean in appearance, with singular leaves and pods. It is a prominent article of food among the Chinese and Japanese, and within a few years has come into cultivation in Europe; and whether grown in China, France, or Hungary, it maintains the same fixed characteristics in its chemical composition and has been pronounced by agricultural chemists to be the richest of all human food. It is hardy and productive and ripens as far north as central Massachusetts. The plant yields leaves and stems more abundantly than the cow peas of the South and I think it may prove superior to them in value for fodder purposes. Baked with the common field beans it will be found to be finer grained and richer flavored.

-1885 James JH Gregory, Senator and Seedsman &#x26;quot;

He's talking about soybeans.

&#x3C;b&#x3E;First Aid Kits&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

My first aid kit is considerably better then a box of bandaids and a bottle of aspirin but when I found this article I realized it's got a ways to go.
&#x3C;!-- m --&#x3E;&#x3C;a class="postlink" href="http://www.concierge.com/images/cnt/pdf/UltimateFirstAidKit.pdf"&#x3E;http://www.concierge.com/images/cnt/pdf ... AidKit.pdf&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;!-- m --&#x3E;

My it is basically compartment 2 and compartment 3.

compartment #5 makes total sense to be in my kit and a lot of #1 and #4 would be useful as well.

Bob Waldrop (former president of the Oklahoma Food Co-op and moderator of the RunningOnEmpty2 group on Yahoo) has put together a &#x3C;a href="http://www.energyconservationinfo.org/compendium.htm" class="postlink"&#x3E;Compendium of Useful Information&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, links to 2GB of pdf's and other info on a variety of prep topics from Animal Power to Wine. Definitely worth checking out.

If only homeboy hadn't used Microsoft Office to make his web page... a pity.
